Why you should travel to the opening round of the TC America Race Series at COTA, The Off track guide to the fun and weird side of Austin,TX

The off track guide to Austin and car geek things to do in and around COTA The circuit of Americas.

Getting to Circuit of the America:  The nearest airport is (AUS) Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin,TX it is 9 miles from the Airport to the track.  The Houston Airport  (IAH) is 160 miles away and or San Antonio Airport are not ridiculously far away.

So you’re thinking about going to COTA for the opening round of TC America Championship!

The good news is Austin, TX has some quirky and interesting things to check out. The city formerly known as Waterloo, Austin is a unique spot in Texas.  It is in the hill country of Texas and is the the capital city, the home of the University of Texas!  It is renowned for Music, A foodie scene and some uniquely Texas spirit.

Car Stuff :

Austin has a unique car culture and it’s very diverse.  The Austin Rock and Roll Car museum has some cool stuff to see even though it has limited hours it will be open on Saturday March 7th from 10am – 3 pm so you can take a quick stroll around the Museum before the first races of the weekend. Note: Race Race 1 for GT4 Sprint X is at `12:15!

The track hosts Cars and Coffee on Saturday Mornings so there is a good chance you could see some cool Austin Flavor early on Saturday in the parking lot, they have not announced if they will be hosting on our race weekend but check the Cars and coffee Austin Facebook page for info. https://www.facebook.com/CarsAndCoffeeAustin/

Austin also has a unique Boutique Drive in Movie Theater only 15 miles from the track and minutes away from Downtown Austin!  The Blue Starlight Mini Drive In is a fun way to spend Thursday or Friday nights watching movies!  It’s a boutique style with interesting choices so make sure you book in advance!   https://www.bluestarlitedrivein.com/home-austin  It’s located just East of downtown at 2103 EM Franklin Ave Austin, TX 78723  If you don’t have a car you can bring chairs and or rent a vintage trailer!

If you want to see what exotic and unique cars to purchase you can always go check out Mosing Motor Cars.  This is owned by a fellow racer and always has some unique vehicles on consignment.  They are located at 2420 W Braker Ln Austin, TX 78758 https://www.mosingmotorcars.com/

Foodie scene: It’s tricky when you recommend food, because everyone’s tastes are different, but asking locals where the 2 best BBQ places are I get Terry Black’s BBQ 1003 Barton Springs Rd Austin, TX 78704  https://www.terryblacksbbq.com/

The other one that always gets mentioned is Mickelthwaits Craft Meats 1309 Rosewood Ave Austin, TX 78702 it’s a food truck in a neighborhood and picnic tables kinda at home BBQ! https://craftmeatsaustin.com/

On the other side of the coin are VEGAN delights!  I however have not tried much of these, so I’m going to cheat and rely on https://www.redhotvegans.com/  They offer a great printable travel version of their recommendations so Vegan plant eaters eat your way through Austin!

Music: With over 250 venues for live music in Austin it will not be hard to find a huge variety of music!  Wind down in the evenings with a beverage of your choice and music.  To Give you an example of the variety:  On Thursday night March 6th you can see a phish tribute band called A LIVE One at the North Door 501 Brushy St in Austin.  Country Singer Roger Creager at Wild West Cedar Park 401 E Whitestone Blvd in Cedar Park,TX (30 miles north of Austin)  If your into UK Metalcore than the While she sleeps tour is in town. Come and take it live 2015 E Riverside Dr. BLDG 4  Austin, TX  A unique Folk, soul, bluegrass sounds of Avi Kaplan  He’s playing at 04Center 2701 S Lamar Blvd Austin,TX  That is a small look at the variety but Mariachis, percussion wind and brass, reggae, funk can all be found!    Enjoy the evenings after a day at the track!

Roadside Relics is a unique and very cool place to get lost!  https://www.roadhouserelics.com/  1720 S First St, Austin, TX 78704 It is an art gallery where the artist uses neon in unique and interesting qways with Road Signs and other unusual takes on neon Art.


Street Murals:  Austin, is filled with street murals, just wondering the city and taking this in are a great way to get a feel for the quirky feel of Austin. You can get a map of the Austin murals here:https://thedaytripper.com/austin-mural-road-trip/

The Cathedral of Junk is an appointment only work of art buried in a South Austin neighborhood.  You can read more about it here. https://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/7816 .  I’ll use this as a way to pump the Roadside America app; although not cheap it has most of the wacky and unique roadside attractions to see!  If you like this sort of thing download the Roadside America app it’s worth the money!

Don’t forget all the other races happening Saturday and Sunday including GT3 cars in the GT World Challenge, The Pirelli GT4 Sprint X and Sprint races as well as the Saleen Cup.
